We start off by talking about the deep learning technology that is taking over the industry, in facial and voice recognition particularly. It appears software can already replace en entire movie’s actor with Nicolas Cage (mostly convincingly, there is obviously room for improvement). What implications does this have on the entertainment and acting industry? Obviously retakes, rerecords and updates will become easier, but is the actor entitled to payment? Is the actor entitled to their own likeness? How does this ripple through the legal, moral, political and news world?
These new technologies combined with AR, VR and the realtime rendering brings us into a new visual, sonic and technology age where places like Matrix are perhaps closer than we think.
“I don’t got anything to teach off of, I just know my shit.” -Charlie on teaching auditions
Charlie talks about his experience working at Next Now, an AR/VR marketing agency. How do these concepts work in the industry and the workplace? Because this is an emerging industry, we discuss where the talent comes from and how the industry is staffing and inventing itself as it emerges.
The roles and skill sets in AR/VR/live experiences have a lot of cross overs from other industries but Charlie talks about the areas that are beginning to require special skill sets or types of people that can handle both extreme creative thoughts as well as technical engineering or design. Often time the producers or project managers not only need to deal with creatives and software based teams, but they also need to plan and manage fabricators, engineers, builders, etc.
Charlie talks about his experience of working his way from school, through the gaming industry, to teaching to AR/VR.
